.Domestication versus Taming.
Dr Jordan defines the difference between domestication and taming
of animals as follows:
- Domestication is a process whereby man has structurally, physiologically
and behaviourally modified certain species of animals by maintaining
them in or near human habitation and by breeding from those certain
animals who seem best suited for various human objectives.
- Taming is a process whereby a wild animal is subdued into adapting
and submitting to human control. Taming of wild animals can be
accomplished by various methods but wildness is still there and
can be triggered off by undue stress. There have been many instances
of trainers being killed or injured by circus animals, particularly
elephants.
Dr Jordan submitted his analysis of the videotape footage of Arna
to the Magistrates Court May 2002, and his statement was accepted.
“Elephants are social creatures and in the wild, the females
live in closely-knit family groups. They spend about 18 hours a
day walking, feeding, bathing in water holes and interacting with
other elephants. They are intelligent and sensitive animals and
are known to mourn the loss of a relative just as humans do. Elephants
suffer in captivity because they are prevented from carrying out
natural behaviours. Many zoos do not keep elephants because they
know they are unable to provide adequate conditions”
