Possible Elephant Ban in Some Circuses?

Mar 4, 2005 3:14 pm US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) (HARTFORD) What would Connecticut's own P-T Barnum say?

Some state legislators want to pass a law this year that would ban the use of elephants in traveling shows and circuses.

Representative Steve Fontana, a Democrat, says performing elephants are often treated badly and sometimes act out. He pointed to cases across the nation where elephants have rampaged and killed people, often their trainers.

But a spokesman for Ringling Brothers circus disagrees with the legislators. He says the elephants are well-cared for and there has never been an incident where an elephant has hurt a circus-goer.

He says if elephants are banned in Connecticut, the circus won't come to Connecticut.

Ringling Brothers has 24 performing elephants who travel with three different circuses.

A Goshen businessman, Bob Commerford, owns three elephants. He brings the elephants, along with other exotic animals, to fairs. He says this bill would put him out of business.
