Circus zoo director charged with cruel treatment of animals

MUROM (Vladimir region), December 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Nikolai Mkrtumyan, director of the Fauna circus zoo of the Rosgostsirk state company who deserted three staff members and circus animals in Murom and fled with a large sum of money, was apprehended on Sunday.
The Murom prosecutor’s office has opened criminal proceedings against Mkrtumyan on the charges of cruel treatment of animals (Article 245 of the Russian Criminal Code) and embezzlement (Article 160), assistant to the Murom regional prosecutor Sergei Trushkin told Itar-Tass.
He said the former director, who is responsible for the lethal starvation of a camel, a wolf, a tiger and a lynx, will have to compensate an over 100,000 ruble damage.
