Tiger rips woman’s arm off
ADI highlights dangers of having wild animals in circuses as tiger rips woman’s arm off in Portugal
As a circus tiger in Portugal is reported to have ripped off a woman’s arm in Portugal yesterday, as she reached into its cage to stroke it, ADI highlights the dangers of wild animals in circuses where public safety is not heeded by the staff.
Only this week Animal Defenders International (ADI) launched a ‘Stop Circus Suffering’ campaign in Ireland together with local animal welfare group ARAN with a hard-hitting report and video from their undercover investigations and warned of the dangers.
Tim Phillips, campaign director for ADI, said: “Poor standards of public safety and indeed animal safety, were evident from both our recent Irish and Portuguese circus investigations into travelling circuses in both countries. Circuses allow people to come into too close contact with potentially dangerous wild animals like tigers or even elephants. For instance, in Ireland Circus Vegas, The American 3-Ring Circus and Daredevil Circus all used their elephants during the show interval for photographs with the audience and Daredevil allowed very small children to sit on the Asian elephants.”
ADI has been campaigning to change the Animal Welfare Bill to ban wild animals from circuses and indeed, end all circus animal suffering. A MORI Poll commissioned by the group in October registered public unease with animal circuses with two in three against them in the UK and a massive 80% against wild animals in circuses.
